Corbie Communal Cemetery, Somme

18th Division, including the 11th Royal Fusiliers battalion of 54 Brigade, arrived in France at end of July, 1915 and after a period of training moved to the Somme area, recently taken over from the French Army. Between 18th and 26th November, 1915, 11th Royal Fusiliers were in the front line in Sector D1 near Fricourt where the usual dangers of trench warfare; shell fire, trench mortars and snipers all had to be faced. By the time they were relieved 11th Royal Fusiliers had suffered seven casualties including Ernest Russell who died from wounds on 21st November.
